Sports & Other Outdoor Activities

Due to the favorable climate conditions with 330 days of sunshine per year,

outdoor activities can essentially be enjoyed all year-round.

Legendary Golf

Sarasota and its surroundings abound with a great variety of golf courses of all categories. They range from private and semi-private to public golf courses.

Memberships to the legendary private golf clubs might be limited and require waiting time to join. But they usually have guests admitting programs.

Tennis

Playing tennis is very popular, thus tennis courts are numerous throughout Sarasota and its vicinity: Not only do country clubs generally offer tennis facilities as part of the amenities, but so do many of the condominium residences and local area-communities.

Polo

Winston Churchill said that a polo handicap is a passport to the world.

At the Sarasota Polo Club you may enjoy the elegant polo games, either as a player or as a spectator. Here, you may also experience the excitement of the ‘Triple Crown of Polo.’

Car Racing

A NASCAR racetrack, on the outskirt of Sarasota, offers the challenge of mastering high speed dangers. But then, that is not for everyone. The necessary skills take time to acquire. Nevertheless, it can also be a lot of fun to watch the bold people in action with their racing machines.

Miscellaneous Sports

Sarasota offers, of course, opportunities to watch a good game or to get involved in the traditional sports such as baseball, football, soccer, basketball, etc., by joining one of the corresponding clubs and associations.

The most popular places to watch major games are the Sarasota Sports Complex and the Ed Smith Stadium.

Horseback Riding

You may either ride your own horses or rent a horse at one of the popular horse-farms.

At the riding schools you may also be able to rent one of the prestigious Viennese Lippizaner.

Bicycle Riding

Bicycling riding is a very popular activity on the trails within the park areas.

Fishing

Whether fishing or canoeing, exploring nature may add some zest to life.

Boating

The waterways are safe and the Sarasota Bay as well as the inter-coastal waters offer a rich variety of nature's scenery. Also, deep-sea fishing, it's a year round pleasure.

Among the marinas, the Marina Jack, shown above, and the Yacht Club are conveniently located.

Sailing

Sailing within the Sarasota Bay or along the coast provides a lot of joy and regattas are highly popular. With the larger boats, you may also lift the anchor to cruise the Caribbean.

A good starting point is from the Sailing Squadron, located on the Sarasota Bay. Sailors are, however, encouraged to consult a map to avoid sandbanks. Incidentally, were birds appear to be walking on the water, be assured that it is the location of a sandbank, barely covered by water.

The Sailing Squadron and the Yacht Club offer safe harbor as well as socializing opportunities with like-minded sailors.

Excellent training courses are also available to sharpen the sailors' skills.

Wind-Surfing

The Sarasota Bay, being entirely surrounded by land, is in high favor of the wind-surfers, especially since the shallow waters of the Bay provide for safe training.

Rowing Championships

The recently opened World-Class Rowing Tracks on Benderson Park, adjacent to the University Town Center, attract rowers for national and international competitions.
